The Do’s and Don’ts of Installing Your Blinds

by Maria Castronuevo

Although you may not have ever bought and installed blinds, do not worry, if you have chosen to buy some new blinds you can easily put them up yourself. All you need to be able to do is to take some measurements and use a hammer and screwdriver when installing them.

When you are ready to install your blinds you will be very happy to know how easy it is to do and does not require a lot of intricate steps. Blinds can be installed no matter the age or gender of the person.

It is essential that you have accurate measurements for the blinds that will be installed in your home. A proper fit both in height and width is very important for the operation of the blind and how it looks in your room. You don’t want to have window coverings that are too short or too long either. Now that you have all the correct measurements, it is time to go shopping for the blinds.

After you have them and bring them home, it is time to start the installation process.

Before you start putting brackets up and creating holes in your walls, get a pencil. Now hold your blinds up at the exact spot that you want them to hang. Use the pencil to make a very light, very small mark on the wall where the brackets will go, on either side of the blinds. This will help guarantee that the brackets are installed in the right spot at the right height, so that your blinds look and fit perfect. Now get your hammer and screwdriver out, because these come into play during the next step.

Take both brackets for your blinds and attach both of them to the wall where you made the marks, one bracket per mark. These usually attach with small screws, normally three or four to a bracket. If the screws do not want to go into the wall easily, simply tap them gently once or twice with the hammer to start them, and then continue with the screwdriver. Make sure to line the brackets up precisely with the marks on the wall during the installation, so that they are far enough apart to hold the blinds. It is very important that the open side of the bracket is facing the front so that the blinds can slide into it.

At this time you will be installing the blinds into the brackets. They should slide easily into the open ends of the brackets and they should also feel snug and secure. There is a small piece used to slide over the open side of the brackets that will lock the blinds in place and give your blinds a finished look.

Now simply stand back and admire your beautiful new blinds, installed perfectly by you without any professional help.
